You’re at JFK and it’s 6 am and your cell phone rings and you’re in the middle of laughing at someone’s joke but you answer the phone because somewhere in your head you think it’s the pet sitter or building super or someone you should speak to before you fly off to somewhere deserted, foreign and filled with blue-green light. You don’t recognize the voice shouting obscenities at you wondering, “Ho, where you at?” And he’s calling you by a name not yours and you respond, “Hey dude, you’ve got the wrong number.” But he doesn’t believe you, as if you’re covering for the woman he calls “Ho”, so you hang up and ignore the subsequent flurry of desperate calls and texts until you board the plane.
I’ve relocated my studio to the far northern reaches of Manhattan and it felt like the universe temporarily gave me the wrong number.
